NINE Tavistock Rugby Girls made it into the Devon County Rugby squad ? more than any other team in Devon. These girls and this club have only been running for one year so they are really the ?new kids on the block?. The talent in Tavistock has started to mature into something all can be proud of as a town. Although full selection for the county team?s starting 15 is yet to be made it should be appreciated that some of these players have only just entered this age bracket and due to new RUFW (Rugby Union Football Women) rules will be eligible for selection for the next three years. Partly due to the success that these girls have shown, the Tamar Cup will be played at Tavistock RFU on December 17. This match sees the best of Devon and Cornwall County sides battle it out in the most talked about county girls match in the RFUW?s calender. It is hoped some of the England World Cup finalists will be in attendance for this prestigious occasion. Tavistock Girls train at the rugby club on Thursdays at 6pm and on Sundays at 10am ? as long as there is no game that day. Crediton Girls U14s 20 Tavistock Girls U14s 67 FROM the initial whistle this did not look like a one-sided match. Due to the lack of full squad players at Crediton the girls decided to play a version of sevens rugby. Credition were first to score with an outstanding solo effort from their county centre Kelly Mitchell. Tavistock responded with devastating effect and ran in ten unanswered tries. All the Tavistock girls played with guts and comittment and deserved their huge victory margin. But the Crediton girls? heads never dropped and they scored three of the last four tries of the match. The biggest accolade should go to the spirit in which the game was played.
