THREE local stylists and the West Devon recycling centre 'Proper-Job' are joining forces to stage a fashion extravaganza next month.
The event on December 4 is a make-over evening with clothes, hair and make-up advice available for all.
Called 'Get the Look', the event will demonstrate how to create this season's look — as seen in magazines such as 'Vogue' and 'Marie Claire' — using recycled and re-made clothing and a bit of hair and make-up flair.
Fashion stylist on the project, Angharad Barlow, trained at the London College of Fashion and believes that re-making new fashions from old is essential from an environmental perspective.
Angharad said the environmental impact of creating new fashion was huge, producing methane emissions and toxic pollution of ground water, yet re-making fashion can be done for next to nothing.
She said: 'Clothing and textile waste per year in UK amounts to about 2.35 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 40kg per person per year — only a quarter of all waste in textiles in the UK are reclaimed, 30kg per person per year goes to landfill.
'At this event we will be able to show anyone who attends how it can be done, how this season's looks can be re-created in style using fashions and fabrics from last season or even last decade.
'It is possible to apply these styling tips and create a stunning look for all ages, sizes and budgets.'
Hair stylist Rebecca Butler and make-up artist Kate Goodwin will be available to give 15 minute sessions on how to update or change your look with ease, and show you how it's done.
Diana Dench, director of ProperJob, said: 'The event also hopes to encourage locals to think about having a more sustainable lifestyle, with a low impact on the planet.
'Many people have no idea that we have a range of stores supplying not just great clothing but gifts, decorations, antiques, Christmas items, furniture and even building supplies for those considering getting stuck into some home renovations over the Christmas break.
'It makes environmental and economic sense to use a community resource like ProperJob — you will be surprised at what we can supply here and can save hundreds of pounds.'
Get the Look will be held at the Jubilee Hall, Chagford on December 4 at 6.30pm.
Tickets are £4 in advance from Sally's Newsagents, White's Salon and ProperJob on 01647 432985. Admission is £4.50 on the door, concessions £3.50.
Hair or make-up sessions cost £3.50 — book in advance on 01647 432985.
A clothes swap will be held from 8.45pm, bring up to three items, take home as many as you came with!
