FOUR Okehampton College girls are taking their banners to London this Saturday to join the peace rally protesting against war with Iraq.

Sisters Kate, 17, and Tess Freeman, 15, Sammy Burdus, 16, and Susie Povey, 17, will be aboard the coach from Okehampton and believe it is important to make their voices heard.

Susie said she believed the majority of students were against the war but wondered what they could do about it.

Kate said: ?If every person who thought they could do nothing went, then that one person becomes thousands.?

She said she did not think the government could ignore such a protest.

?On the last anti-war march in London 400,000 people went. They are hoping to increase the number this time. If there are buses going from places across the country like Okehampton the turnout should be huge.?

Kate said she did not feel there should be a war ?because thousands of innocent people would be killed?.

The girls ?Tess who is Year 10 and Sammy, Kate and Susie who are sixth form students ? said many of their teachers were pleased they were going to the peace rally.

?They felt that in the past few years youths had not taken a strong interest in world matters,? said Kate.

Meanwhile in Okehampton on Saturday the Okehampton Peace Coalition has organised a vigil in Fore Street from 10am to 2pm.

Spokesperson for the group, Ana Pulteney, said the coalition hoped everyone, including children, would come and support the event. There will be an opportunity to sign the Stop The War Coalition petition to be sent to the Prime Minister.
