THE first ever 'inspiration day' was held at Tavistock College last week.

The purpose of the day was to help all students to focus on their aspirations and plans for the future.

A spokesperson for the school said: 'The day was a huge success and really opened the students' eyes to future possibilities. We worked with a number of local businesses and community groups and this gave our students a real understanding of the world of work and all the options open to them in the future.'

Year 7 expressed their hopes and aspirations through music, drama, dance, art and film making.

The spokesperson said: 'They thoroughly enjoyed working with the MED Theatre Company. Activities for Year 7 culminated in a performance in the hall for parents and staff.

'Everyone was very impressed by the ingenuity and creativity shown by these students.'

Year 8 students spent the day looking at cultural identity and the challenges they would face in life.

The students worked with the Barbican Theatre Company and some thought provoking and interesting work was carried out.

Year 9 students, who are currently choosing their options subjects, explored 'pathways to the future'. They were able to identify their skills and strengths and learn more about the qualifications they will need to progress.

The spokesperson said: 'Year 10 students had a very positive real life experience working with local business people from the Chamber of Commerce. This involved CV writing, shaping applications, interview skills and a full interview with representatives from the local business community.

'Many of our students came into college in business dress to make this experience as real as possible.'

Tavistock Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Nigel Eadie, said: 'We are delighted to have been involved with Tavistock College in helping to provide mock interviews. The performance of the students was very impressive, they were all well-prepared, professional, and a tremendous credit to the College.  We hope that by providing these interviews - with feedback and guidance - the students will be even more prepared for the real work environment.'

Master classes were held for many year 11 students who are currently preparing for their exams. They were also treated to inspirational talks from the captain of the Plymouth Raiders Basketball Team and representatives from the armed forces, fire brigade, paramedics and local universities.

The inspiration day also included the sixth form students, many of whom are preparing to go to university. Their sessions included cooking on a budget, managing finance, stress management and how to apply for university.

Principal Helen Salmon said the day had been a 'huge success'.

'It is part of our drive to link with our local community and enable our young people to benefit from the expertise and the people in the Tavistock and surrounding areas.

'There was a real buzz in the college during the day with students preparing for the world of work and strengthening their opportunities to enrich and extend their learning.'

Mrs Salmon said this major event was 'no small undertaking' and she paid tribute to assistant principal Gary King for providing the students with such a wonderful experience.
