Devon 2
North Tawton 5
Marjohns 51
NORTH TAWTON, still looking for their first win, were up against the college side from Plymouth in their league game at home.
As in recent weeks it was North Tawton who started off the stronger with some good set phases and second phases from the forwards,
After passing the visitors? line for the first ten minutes they were rewarded with a succession of penalties and it was wing forward Richard Huxtable who got the deserved touch down to put North Tawton into an early lead.
But it was not for long ? the visitors quickly found their feet and speed and with their heavier pack supplying more balls their quick threequarters ran in some good tries.
Marjohns worked well as a team and ran in four tries and three conversions before the half-time whistle.
Coach Rod Stoddart made some tactical changes at the break and although North Tawton could not score, their game improved. Phil Whale was a revelation at first centre, ably supported by Andy Bourmer. He made an instant impact on the game and the forwards at last having something to run with also picked up their game, especially Kevin Avery, who is having his best spell for the club at wing forward.
Nigel Dennis returned on the wing and has obviously lost none of his old strength and tenacity.
So despite three late tries to the opposition, North Tawton second half display was the best of the season so far and with more players returning and more training it could start getting difficult for selector Pete Hoggins and coach Rod Stoddart.
l North Tawton are home this Saturday in a friendly, kick-off 3pm.
