YEAR 8 students at Callington Community College have taken over an allotment plot as part of their citizenship lessons. The students have been growing food for the Foodbank in Callington and recently the youngsters harvested their first crop of the year — with more crops being nurtured ready to go to the Foodbank. Students had to clear the vegetable beds before planting could take place, they built bamboo bean tunnels and then prepared the beds for planting. Following the enthusiasm from the students with the lessons, they have now started a gardening and allotment club which is run after school for all year groups. The college has obtained an allotment in Callington and youngsters are now growing produce there as well for the Foodbank. The college and students have expressed thanks to Goldenbank Nursery in Liskeard, which donated compost and potatoes to support the college allotment.
