FOUR Tavistock College students had the chance to work on a competitive racing car as part of a motorsports engineering course. Tyrone Austin, Peter Frise, Tom Jeffries and Jordan Ring attended the four-day residential course at Oxford Brookes University from July 17 to 20. The course provided the pupils with a unique opportunity to gain an insight into the engineering and technology behind a competitive racing car. Students were given an insight into CAD, stress testing, aerodynamics and racing car design through a series of workshops and team activities. They also had an industrial visit to Prodrive and developed skills such as teamwork, communication, problem solving and time management. The social programme included a reception and formal dinner where the students met and presented their work to guests and industrialists from firms supporting the course. The programme was designed through a partnership between the Smallpiece Trust and Oxford Brookes University. Spokesperson for the Smallpeice Trust, Gemma Murphy, said the experience was designed to give young people a feel of how exciting and rewarding engineering can be, and it was encouraging to see such enthusiasm and high-quality work from the students.
