STUDENTS from Edogawa City in Tokyo met Tavistock mayor Harry Smith when he welcomed them to the town on the summer exchange visit recently (pictured above). The 20 Japanese students stayed with host families from Tavistock College for ten days, enjoying the town's cultural and culinary delights. The Japanese students went through a rigorous selection procedure to secure one of the 20 places from more than 400 applicants, such is the popularity of the Edogawa Youth Wings programme. Some of the host students will be taking part on the reciprocal visit to Tokyo from November 15 to 28. Highlights of their stay included horse-riding on Dartmoor; trips to Exeter Cathedral and Tintagel; a cream tea in the Bedford Hotel as well as a visit to Whitchurch Primary School. They also enjoyed college life and attending lessons with their host students.
