St Austell 2

Callington Town 2

ROARED on by a good contingent of supporters, Callington had the brighter opening without over-stretching the St Austell defence, but it was the home side who took the lead with their first attack after nine minutes.

Nick Campbell made the opening on the right and his cross beat Phil Burgoyne, struck the leg of defender Adam Bartlett and flew into the net.

Callington's Chris Gerry found the side netting at the other end on 14 minutes before his side suffered a double injury blow that would have floored most sides.

First Bartlett, who a couple of minutes previously saw a shot whistle past the right hand post of the Saints' goal, hobbled off with a leg injury, then Town keeper Burgoyne was carried off after receiving a severe facial injury and was taken to hospital suffering from suspected concussion.

Defender Simon Courts took over between the posts with Stuart Wakenshaw joining Matt Martin as early substitutes.

Courts made a couple of good saves before being beaten by Daniel Nancarrow on 43 minutes as St Austell went in at the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

But the half-time break proved to be a real tonic for the Marshmen, as they came out with renewed purpose and laid siege to the St Austell goal.

Gary Williams caused problems on the left wing and the cross on 50 minutes was powerfully headed home at the far post by Bradley Swiggs.

Chris Truscott, a second half substitute for his brother Tony, shot wide having been put through on 75 minutes, but the equaliser which looked on the cards did not arrive until the 88th minute.

Wakenshaw won the ball in midfield, beat two defenders and then let rip a 25-yard rasping shot that beat Ellis Glossop in the Saints' goal to send the visiting fans into raptures and finish an eventful year for Callington, settled in mid-table in the league.
