WARD and Chowen, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, report another strong trade for the 486 cattle sold at their recent July Fair sale.

Top price of the day was £1,100 for a 25mo pedigree Charolais bull from S Baker and Son, Lewdown.

Other bulls sold included two 17mo and 15mo pedigree Limousins selling to £930 and £880 respectively.

Cows and calves sold to £750 for a 3 year old pedigree South Devon cow (Sire: Trewint Hector 3) with her 3mo South Devon heifer calf at foot from M H Coumbe and Son, Stoke Climsland.

A total of 460 store cattle topped at £648 for 2 16mo Charolais x steers first claim, from W T Jasper and Son, Callington.Second claim steers sold to £552 for a 25mo South Devon from F R Hill, Lewdown.

No claim steers sold to £560 for an 11mo Limousin x from J H,S J and P M Cole, Sampford Spiney with 13-19mo no claim steers selling to £552 for an 18mo Friesian from M H Eggins, Roborough.

Heifers were again in good demand topping at £525 for a 26mo Charolais x from Mrs E Horn, Lamerton. Young heifers (0-15mo) sold to £470 for 3 12/15mo Charolais x from M H Eggins, Roborough, while 16-21 heifers topped at £482 for two 17/19mo South Devons from R H Murrin, Bere Alston.

Other prices included £415 for 3 11/12mo Simmental x heifers from F G and D M Penwill, Mary Tavy; £590 for 4 18/20 Welsh Black steers, first claim, from D H and C Legassick, Sheepstor; £440 for 4 8mo South Devon steers, no claim, from E J Friend and Son, Lydford and £492 for 4 7/9mo Charolais x steers, no claim, from I G Northmore and Son, Chagford.
