RENDELLS report a successful annual show and sale of suckled calves at Chagford Market on November 25 with a good attendance of buyers including some new faces. A good number of well bred suckled calves forward from regular market vendors, who were rewarded with a strong trade.

The auctioneers expressed thanks to the judges Mr J Stephens, of Crediton, Mr A Wrayford, of Newton Abbot and the show sponsors Mole Avon Town and Country Stores of Okehampton.

The Champion and the Tom Turner trophy was awarded to H Scott and Son, of Drewsteignton, for 7 month Blonde d'Aquitaine X steers later selling for £610, the same vendor also was awarded the Farmers' Trophy for a similar type Blonde X steer, selling at £590.

Second place in the cross bred teers was awarded to I G Mortimore and Son for May to June born Charolais X steers, selling to £552.  

The first place prize for best bunch of pure bred calves was awarded to WJ & DM Jordan of Gidleigh, Mr M Scott being awarded the champion for 7 month South Devon steers, selling later at £532 and the Tom Turner trophy by Mr T Turner.

Steers— Blonde d'Aquitaine X (7mo) to £610 for H Scott & Son of Drewsteignton others to £600, £590, £562, £520, and £515. Charolais X (4-6mo) to £552 for I G Mortimore and Son of Chagford. South Devon (7mo) to £532 for WJ and DM Jordan others to £530 for W G Hutchings of Yardworthy, Chagford the same vendor also selling British Blue X to £405 and Limousin X (6mo) to £450.

Heifers — Limousin X to £500 for 6mo types from WJ and DM Jordan the same vendor also having 7mo South Devon to £430 and British Blue X to £355. Blonde d'Aquitaine X (8mo) to £415, Hereford X to £350 and Aberdeen Angus X to £350 for H Scott and Son. Charolais X (6mo) to £350 for I G Mortimore and Son. others to £348.

Cows and calves — the show and sale was followed by a dispersal sale on behalf of Miss G Clouting of Chagford. Outfits sold to £705 for a 2007 born Aberdeen Angus cross bred cow and steer calf at foot. Others to £660 and £650. Aberdeen Angus 26mo heifers running with bull sold to £560.

Store cattle — store cattle sold to £565 for Hereford X steers from P A Mears, who also had heifers to £445. South Devon steers to £525 for D Rogers.

The next store cattle sale at Chagford Market will be on Thursday, March 3.
