TAVISTOCK College students impressed judges with their verbal skills in the Rotary Youth Speaks district competition.

Three teams from Tavistock College took part in the district competition at Callington Community College, one in the intermediate section and two in the senior section.

In the intermediate section Tavistock gained first place, their subject being 'Very superstitious' with speaker Joe Way, chairperson Ellie Oaten, and a vote of thanks given by Jed Coiley.

In the senior section, first was 'Moderation is Boring' with Florence Rodgers, Saskia Sills and Annabel Longden, and second was 'Population' with Katy Hyde, Jack Coiley and Hannah Keane.

All three teams went forward in the area finals. Competition was strong with participants from all over Cornwall. The three Tavistock teams put up a strong performance.

The intermediate team was placed third, however, Ellie Oaten was awarded Best Chairperson and Joe Way was awarded Best Speaker.

In the senior section the team presenting 'Moderation is Boring' was awarded joint third with Truro College and Annabel Longden was awarded first for vote of thanks.

The Tavistock students and teachers put much time and effort into the event and look forward to the 2012 competition.
