THE fourth Westward League cross-country event was held on Sunday at Bideford.

The day was marked by contrasting weather conditions with pleasant sunshine giving way to heavy hailstones.

The first race of the day included both the Under 17 men and women and senior ladies. Adam Holland, running for the Tavistock club, had a strong finish in fourth place.

Louise Elsworth finished 45th overall in the race but well up in the U17 age category.

In the U13 boys? race Nathan Wonnacott ran well, finishing in ninth place. In the U15 girls? race Suzy Blandford also ran well to finish in eleventh place, significantly improving her position in the league.

In the fifth race of the day Alex Richards also had a good run finishing in a well deserved eighth place.

In the senior men?s event there were five runners representing Tavistock.

In a closely fought duel Martin Exley held off a number of challenges from fellow team mate Richard Drage to lead the Tavistock runners home. He finished strongly in sixth place with Richard Drage following just behind in seventh.

This was an exceptional performance by both runners, resulting in two Tavistock runners coming in the top ten in the senior men?s race for the first time ever .

Tony Symons was the next runner home, in his first ever Westward league race, finishing well in 34th place. Chris Eastaugh also had a good race, finishing in 45th place, followed closely by Robin Musgrave who finished 47th.
