THE National Association for Areas of Outstanding Natural?Beauty (NAAONB) and National Parks England (NPE) signed an Accord last week which builds on and strengthens the significant joint working and collaboration that already exists at national and local level.
Through the Accord, the distinctiveness of the AONBs and national parks is celebrated, their differences acknowledged and the strength that comes from a varied family recognised.
Through nine focused, pragmatic and solutions-oriented statements, the Accord embodies working together to ensure these special places remain viable and prosper for the benefit of all.
Environment minister Rory Stewart said: ‘Our areas of outstanding natural beauty and national parks are vital to rural life. They protect and care for some of our most cherished landscapes. I am delighted that these two organisations will now be working even more closely together.’
Jim Bailey, chairman of National Parks England, said: ‘Our national parks and AONBs are recognised as being our finest landscapes, visited by millions of people every year and home to thriving communities.
‘People are passionate about these beautiful areas and care deeply about their future. Our Accord demonstrates a clear commitment to work together.
‘As long term custodians of these wonderful places we aim to ensure they continue to inspire and remain special for future generations.’
Peter Hygate, chairman of the National Association for AONBs, said: ‘I am delighted we have agreed to this Accord. Together we can make things happen; translating vision and national policy into local action.
‘With this firm commitment to continue our joint work, we will be able to support and promote a sustainable, rural community that conserves and enhances the natural environment for the benefit of society.’
