RESIDENTS of Calstock were invited to 'celebrate or grumble' at a street party held at Lower Kelly on Saturday — the site of the road collapse that took place on Christmas Day. The party was organised by some of the Lower Kelly residents as a chance to take advantage of the road being closed before it was due to be re-opened to vehicular access today (Thursday), after nearly five months of being cut off from the national road network. Resident Martin Smith said the party-goers had a 'great time' and they were thinking of holding a street party on a regular basis. With the road re-opening, a number of residents asked Cornwall Council to enforce a speed restriction on the road. Mr Smith said: 'It is the only level, paved walk in Calstock, added to which it is alongside the river and disproportionately used by pedestrians, dog walkers, cyclists — uni and two-wheeled — runners and skateboarders. 'Also it is the pedestrian route to Cotehele from the railway station. Furthermore it is a dead end lane ending in the woods. It seems crazy that along the majority of it one can legally drive at 60mph.' However, Cornwall Council has rejected the suggestion due to there being no history of accidents along Lower Kelly Road. This has not deterred the group of residents however, as they will continue to lobby for the restriction in the future.
