A FINE stoneware vase with spiral reeded decoration by the modern sculptress and potter Lucie Rie was the most intriguing item uncovered at an antiques valuation morning in Tavistock last Friday week.

Lucie Rie died three years ago and the ten-inch high vase would be estimated to make between £1,500 and £3,000 at auction.

The vase was one of several items brought to the open-counter valuation morning held in the Bedford Hotel by Plymouth antique valuer Michael Newman.

One woman brought in a 19th century 'Tinker's Kettle' made of hand-hammered copper with 'sweated' seam and iron handle. The kettle has been described as the sort of thing hung behind a Gipsy's Caravan and has been left for sale. It is expected to fetch £100.

Other items included attractive pieces of jewellery, engravings and paintings and three pieces of Carlton Ware to be offered for sale in Plymouth. One client brought in 60 pieces of elegant silverware including small boxes, vesta cases, condiments and visiting card cases — all of which will also be sold in Plymouth.

The next open-counter event is at the Bedford Hotel on Friday, April 12, between 10am-12.30pm.
