A LECTURER from Stoke Climsland described as ‘outstanding’ has been recognised as one of the best educators in Cornwall.

Rebecca Ball, a further education (FE) outdoor adventure lecturer at Duchy College was shortlisted for the FE lecturer of the year at the prestigious Cornwall Teacher Awards 2018.

Now in its third year, there were more than 1,000 nominations for the awards which recognises excellence in teaching, training and education in Cornwall.

And last Friday (May 4) at a glittering ceremony in Truro Cathedral, Rebecca was deemed the winner of her category by national experts.

Judges said: ‘Rebecca has a 100 per cent employment record for students who finish her course and now employers even call Rebecca to ask for her students. The statistic obviously speaks for itself, but Rebecca was also nominated for having an admiral dedication and a passion for teaching.’

Rebecca said she felt ‘very privileged’ to receive the award sponsored by NOCN.

‘When I completed my BTEC college course in the outdoors, 14 years ago, I looked at my lecturers and knew that was the job I wanted to do,’ she added.

‘I love being able to deliver outdoor practical adventurous activities and then linking that to classroom lectures is such a great job.

‘Being able to help the students at Duchy College grow and develop is very rewarding. Just being shortlisted for this award was more than enough but to actually win was a very special moment.’

Team lead for sport at Duchy College Darren Evans said Rebecca was an ‘outstanding lecturer’ and that the college was lucky to have her working in the outdoor department. He added: ‘Her work with students and employers is truly inspirational and she is certainly deserving of the award.’

Other winners, nominees and guests were treated to an evening of celebration for those who have dedicated their outstanding work to positively impact Cornwall’s children and young people.

This year, there were 16 awards up for grabs, including ‘outstanding headteacher’, ‘outstanding school’ and ‘outstanding student well-being initiative’.
