ONCE again, the local committee for Cancer Research UK would like to thank the people of Tavaistock and its surrounding villages for their generous support. Our street collection in July raised £1,259 and the football badges for the Bobby Moore Fund during the World Cup raised over £500. The vision of Cancer Research UK is to conquer cancer through world-class research, aiming to control the disease within two generations. Those who have benefited from treatment for cancer or have family members affected by the disease know how important it is to continue and increase reaearch into causes and new treatments. Anyone wishing to support this work by either organising a fund-raising event themselves, such as a Pink Ribbon Day for Breast Cancer Awareness in October, by coming along to our coffee morning on Friday November 10, by bringing a team to our quiz evening on Wednesday December 6, or assisting the local committee in any way should ring our secretary, Jean Thompson, on 01822 614635 for help and advice. The McCarthy family, with the help of their friends, have organised a Pink Ribbon Ball for the last three years, raising nearly £6,000! This year?s ball will be on October 7 at the Moorland Links Hotel with dancing to a live band, a full course dinner, an auction and a fun casino. Tickets are £35 and can be obtained from Mrs Val McCarthy on 01579 348491. Elizabeth Harding for Cancer Research UK Old Berkeley High Bank Tavistock
