A MEETING is due to be held between members of Tavistock Town Council and West Devon?s planning officers in an attempt to come to an agreement regarding banners in the town centre. The town council would like to erect several vertical banners from lamp-posts in the Bedford Square area, similar to the type of banners which have been erected in Okehampton Fore Street or outside Tavistock Library. But planning officers at West Devon have insisted this type of banner would be out of character in the centre of the town?s conservation area. And at last week?s meeting of the town?s finance committee, town clerk Roger Howard told members the borough was also concerned the town should look its best, in the light of the visit by UNESCO inspectors later this year, in connection with a bid for World Heritage Site status. Cllr Norma Woodcock said vertical banners would be an improvement on the present ones strung up on blue nylon rope between Court Gate and the town hall. Cllr Ann Johnson agreed the ?blue twine? was ?not good? when the council was trying to enhance the area. Members agreed a meeting should be set up between Cllr Woodcock, mayor Jenny Metcalf and borough council planning officer Ed Persse to discuss the matter further.
