A MORWELLHAM grandmother is to cycle through India with Formula One team owner Eddie Jordan in aid of CLIC — and the journey may include encounters with elephants, monkeys, antelopes and buffaloes.

Stella White, a carer support worker and counsellor, will undertake the 424-kilometre adventure in November with a group of fundraisers, which will include Eddie — patron of CLIC — and Marie Jordan.

Stella said: 'My daughter Lisa, who is a children's nurse and has spent some time as a CLIC nurse, suggested I should try the challenge, and as I enjoy cycling and like an adventure I decided to give it a go.'

Grandmother to three grandchildren, Stella spent seven years as a community Macmillan nurse herself and understands how important it is for families to have the support of the specialist nurses CLIC provides.

The cycle ride will also be a practice run for a bigger challenge for Stella next year. Her friend Viv Horton, a social worker from Tavistock, is planning to cycle home from Kazakhstan in southern Asia — where she is undertaking a two-year placement with VSO — and Stella will join her for part of the trip.

Stella is hoping to raise more than £2,000 for CLIC and fund-raising kicks-off with a village fete and barbecue at Morwellham on Saturday August 11 at 2pm. There will be fun for all the family, including a bouncy castle, merry-go-round, races, fancy dress competition, tug-of-war and demonstrations of country crafts. The Ship Inn on the quay will be open for liquid refreshment.
