Tamar League A

Werrington

BEING put in to bat at Kelly College Werrington started in a positive fashion with their opening batsmen playing their shots despite the wet wicket conditions.

With the damp underfoot conditions the Tavistock attack of Goldstone and Folley struggled initially which Werringtons Gill and Paynter cashed in on.

Eventually the Tavistock pair tightened up their line and were soon rewarded with Folley capturing the wickets of Hutchins and Gill (33).

Tavistock threatened to take control several times with further wickets falling to Chidzoy and Ben Crowl, but Werrington kept coming back with useful knocks from Hatch (30), Wills (21) and a superb rapid 55 knock from young Tetley.

With the fall of Tetley being unfortunately run out, Tavistock were back on top with Colt Nick Scaglioni bowling a superb spell of well-flighted spin and was good value for his two wickets for only 12 runs. Goldstone, back in to the attack, was also now bowling a good line picking up the wicket of Wills to leave Werrington on a useful 169-9 at tea.

More heavy showers at tea made the wicket even softer and the target of 169 even larger. The Tavistock innings started brightly with a couple of nice boundary drives from opener Sandhu with Piper looking solid at the other end. Then Peterson struck taking the wicket of Sandhu caught by Gill in only the third over. However, Steed and Piper put on a solid partnership with the latter playing the solid support role and Steed procuring some positive stroke-play. Riding his luck a couple of times early on Steed proceeded to make Werrington pay for a couple of comfortable chances that they allowed to go begging. With Steed leading the way the Tavistock pair took control to put their side into a commanding position with a superb 124 partnership before the fall of Piper for 34.

With only 30 required to win Steed was joined by Chidzoy who comfortably kept his end up allowing Steed to reach his deserved ton and with it the win for Tavistock fittingly secured with a big six.

A superb knock from Steed (three sixes 16 fours) and good support from Piper was the key to the home win, but all the team contributed with Pete Crowl behind the stumps securing a catch and two stumpings.

l This week Tavistock entertain big hitting Lifton at Kelly College, 2pm start.
