TWO Tavistock women are hoping hundreds of others will join them in a special event they are organising in the town this May ? involving decorated bras and a midnight walk. Pam Thurgood and Bev Rodgers are staging the sponsored event to coincide with the famous London night time ?Moonwalk? ? an event which attracts thousands of women from all over the world who band together to raise funds for cancer charities. Pam said: ?We tried to get into the London Moonwalk but they were just inundated. We heard that people in Exeter were starting up their own walk, so we thought we?d try it here. ?We?ve gone through all the right channels and it?s okay with the police and the council ? we just need the walkers now.? Pam said the walkers will be known as the Tavistock Star Trekkers ? the event will take place at midnight on May 20 and organisers are aiming to get 400 participants. All the funds raised will be donated to the breast cancer and oncology unit at Derriford Hospital. Pan said: ?The idea of the London event is they all wear decorated bras on top of their t-shirts, so we hope everyone will join in the idea with our Tavistock event.? The Star Trekkers will follow a 14-mile route around the Tavistock area, starting at Morrisons car park. The walkers will head out towards Horrabridge, Walkhampton and Yelverton before heading back towards Tavistock once more. Pam said: ?I hope the distance won?t put people off. In London they do a whole marathon, but that distance round here would take ages. ?We thought we had to make a significant enough distance to be a bit of a challenge, but there are going to be cars on stand-by on the route if people don?t want to do the whole distance.? There will be a vehicle ahead of the bra-clad walkers to warn oncoming traffic and another vehicle bringing up the rear. The event is being started by two cancer and oncology consultants from Derriford Hospital. The Tavistock Star Trekkers Walk costs £12 per person to enter ? each participant is being asked to raise at least £20 in sponsorship. Anyone who would like to join the walk or who would like more information should call Pam Thurgood on 01822 615323 or Bev Rodgers on 07974 616627.
