GUESTS at the Manor House Hotel at Fowley Cross had to be evacuated from their rooms in the early hours of Monday following a fire.
The fire started in a room on the ground floor of the hotel used for storing mattresses ? 171 guests were evacuated from their rooms to another part of the building when the fire was discovered.
Two fire appliances from Okehampton attended. A team of four firefighters with breathing apparatus quickly brought the fire under control.
Station officer Ian Donovan said guests were allowed to return to their rooms around two hours later.
Andy Brent, general manager at the Manor House Hotel, said staff and guests kept calm throughout the process of evacuation.
?They dealt with it calmly and efficiently. Everybody was evacuated into the bar where we provided tea and coffee and then they were allowed back to their rooms,? he said.
l North Tawton firefighters were called out to a sleeper fence fire at Winkleigh airfield.
The incident occurred at 9.30am on Sunday. The firecrew used a hose reel to extinguish the blaze within an hour.
Slight damage was caused to the fence.
