THE Devonshire second team arrived at Pixon Lane early and enthusiastic albeit with a much weakened team. Tavistock Squash Club pulled together five strong players for this league division two match. The first was experienced Pete Walshe at number 5 taking on Ray Wills. Even with all of Pete?s experience he managed to let the first game slip away 5-9. Pete soon wised up to his opponent?s tactics and played some excellent squash. He took the next 3 games winning the match 3-1. Dave Farrel playing at number 4 took on Oliver who took the first tightly contested game 10-8. The match looked like it was going to be a very even affair but Dave upped the anti, found his rhythm, slowed the pace down and took the next 3 games with ease winning the match 3-1. The match of the evening was between Mike Gray and Joe at number 3. Joe took the first 2 games 10-9, 9-3 and Mike looked beaten. Having won his 2 previous matches in 5 sets Mike had other ideas. Driving the ball hard and moving much better Mike took the next 2 games 9-1 and 9-6. Joe came out with renewed energy for the 5th and decisive game, Mike matched him shot for shot winning the game 9-7 and the match 3-2. Steve Tripp and Stuart Cox playing at 1 and 2 respectively had an easy night of it, both showing their class over much weaker opponents with neither player dropping a game and Steve only conceding 5 points in his match. Tavistock won the match 5 games to nil making them the team to beat in Devon Companies? League 2. Squash is a great way to keep fit, socialise and enjoy yourself. Once you get into the game it becomes addictive trying to pit your wits against your next opponent. Regardless of age, size or standard squash is hugely rewarding and with the average game lasting about 45 minutes it does not take up too much time. Tavistock squash club is situated to the rear of Pixon Lane behind Kings. There is a club night every Wednesday between 6 and 9pm when the club is open to non-members. Whether you?re a beginner or an experienced player come along for a game. Club membership liaison officer and coach Malcom Tripp can be contacted on 01822 615239.
