OKEHAMPTON Choral Society have been singing together for 35 years under the leadership of John Holland and this weekend they unveil their spring concert. The concert celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart and will show various aspects of the great composers? music. Katherine Bond will again be the popular soprano soloist with Louise Mott, Peter Evans and Roger Cleverdon. Katherine will also be joined by clarinetist Michelle Osborne for Schubert?s Shepherd on the Rock. The orchestra, the Ockment Players are led by Paul Mathews, whose members are drawn from Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, and will join the evening programme. The spring concert takes place on Saturday, April 29 at 7.30pm at Fairplace Church, in Okehampton. The first half of the concert will feature Mozart as well as Schubert. The second half will feature Mozart?s Great C minor Mass, written to celebrate Mozart?s own wedding with his new wife as soloist. John Holland said: ?Like the Requiem, for some reason it was never finished but what has been left to us is still an awesome piece of music. ?It has been a real challenge for the society to learn and we have had to work very hard indeed to come to terms with the difficulties of the choral writing which is often laid out for two four-part choirs. ?It has been a joy to see the music come alive from the page as the weeks passed and we look forward with some enthusiasm to performing the whole thing with the soloists and orchestra.? Tickets from Beanfeast in the Arcade, priced £6, or £3 for students.
