A SESSION of sponsored sums added up to £40 being raised for the NSPCC recently.
The children at the Kumon maths group, held at the Alexander Centre in Tavistock, held a Mathathon when they attempted as many sums as they could in an hour, each sum raising a set amount for the NSPCC.
Laura White, group instructor, said the average number achieved was 600-700. Frankie Butler, who achieved the highest number of 870, received the prize of a colour-changing mug.
There are about 20 children in the maths group who also received advanced student awards that afternoon. Two received gold awards, which Laura said was unusual — Frankie Butler, 10, for algebra and Samantha Fraser, also 10, for fractions.
