SPEEDING motorists in Callington will be targeted in a scheme that will see six Duchy College students helping police in a community speedwatch programme.

The students, from the college's police studies course, will help the police on a voluntary basis, having registered an interest in the Police Volunteer Programme.

The volunteers will be armed with speed monitoring devices at locations around Callington. Motorists caught speeding will be issued with a warning letter. Although volunteers are not able to prosecute offenders, constant offenders will be at risk of being targeted by uniformed officers. As well as helping with the speedwatch, the students will help in updating the Neighbourhood Watch website and general IT, and will be knocking on doors to identify areas of concern for residents.

Sgt Brett Phillips of Callington said the tasks were those which would not be fulfilled by a paid person. It would be beneficial for police, the college and the community, he said.
