TRAFFIC entering Bishopsmead on the A386 from Plymouth at its usual 40mph is likely to end up with a speeding ticket.
Tavistock's 30mph zone is to be extended up past McDonalds to improve pedestrian safety on the zebra crossing and that of motorists turning into and out of the Bishopsmead estate.
It was originally approved in 1998 by the West Devon partnership committee but implementation has had to wait until funding could be found.
The move was supported by Tavistock Town Council's planning committee. Cllr Roger Mathew said he valued the 40mph zone as a transition between the 60mph national speed limit and the 30mph urban limit.
However, Mike Parnell, Devon County Council's local services officer said the zone was only 300m long and served only to slow traffic close to the crossing.
The speed limit on the A390 Callington Road is also to be reduced.
Residents of the Abbotsfield estate have expressed concerns about the speed of traffic passing the estate entrance and a safety audit on cycle route 27, which joins the road there, also recommended the 30mph zone was extended to control traffic speed on the approach to the cycle crossing point.
