LONDONERS joined locals on Thursday last week for an evening service in Tavistock parish church to mark St Michael and All Angels' day. 

This was no ordinary service: it was taken by one of the retired priests in the town, the Rev Denis Hutchings, who that day celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination as a priest, in St Paul's Cathedral in 1961. 

Denis was priest-in-charge of Brent Tor and Lydford from 1993 to 1995, and before that was team rector of Devonport for ten years. 

The service was followed by a reception in the church.
