SOUTH Zeal and district village gardens will be open for the sixteenth time this year, with 17 gardens on view to the public in South Zeal and South Tawton on Sunday June 17. The two villages contain between them a broad range of gardens from water gardens to herb gardens, and from small hidden oases, to large plots with wide open views over the surrounding countryside. The organisers promise something to interest every type of gardener, would-be-gardener and armchair gardener. Gardens will be open between 10.30am and 6pm. A programme, costing just £3, provides access to as many of the 17 gardens as you can fit in. Weary visitors will find morning coffee, ploughman?s lunches (from noon to 2pm) and luscious puddings served in the Victory Hall, while cream teas will be on offer in the playing field pavilion and in Church House in South Tawton, where there will also be an exhibition of paintings by a local art group. The village choral group Moor Harmony will be giving a choral concert at 1pm in St Mary?s Chapel, and there will be a plant sale at Moorlands ? one of the open gardens . The Victory Hall Management Committee, the Church House and the Recreation Ground Association will benefit from the proceeds . Visitors are requested to use the car-park in South Zeal to avoid congesting the village, and to leave dogs at home.
