A BRAND new spacious ?outstanding building? has been completed and is the proud home of foundation children at St Rumon?s Infants School. The Foundation Unit, for pupils aged four to five, has more than doubled in size from the previous classroom and houses a purpose built kitchen, toilets, new windows and a second floor reading area. The enclosed outside area has also been re-decorated with a new shelter so children can learn and play outside even in wet weather. The work on the unit and on the walkway by the entrance started in March and was completed a couple of weeks ago. Before, the walkway had only a concrete floor and shelter above but now the entrance has been incorporated into the refurbishment and even boasts two disabled toilets. Clare Wesson, headmistress at St Rumon?s, expressed how proud she was of the new building. She said: ?I am absolutely delighted and I feel we have a marvellous facility for the foundation children ? it will give them a good start to their school life. It?s an outstanding building and is a first class facility.? Tim Jones, school governor and a member of the building committee, who helped oversee the building work, said: ?For their age group there are statutory regulations and what was here didn?t meet those requirements. This is now exactly what they need. They are all going to benefit from this throughout the school. It?s a real boost for the whole school. We are really pleased.? An open day will be held in November for everyone in Tavistock to view the unit and the other renovations throughout the school. The date will be publicised nearer the time. The official opening of the building will take place tomorrow by councillor Brenda Taylor, chairman of Devon County Council.
