HAVING read a letter recently, requesting a pedestrian crossing on Drake Road, and having seen and felt the effects of the lack of such a crossing, I can only agree.
The so-called crossings that exist are misleading and misunderstood, especially by people not living in the town. They are neither one thing nor the other. I appreciate that it would be difficult to site a crossing between Bedford Square and the Viaduct, in such a place where it would be both legal and used.
However, a very useful addition would be to extend the pavement from the front of Kingdon House to the corner with Drake Road. I have seen at least two collisions at this junction, because one has to move into the middle of Drake Road, whether pedestrian or motorist in order to see what is coming to the left or right on Drake Road, and the traffic there is certainly going at more than 30 miles per hour.
As a blind man (95%) living on Kilworthy Hill, who uses this junction daily, both myself and my guide dog find it difficult. Do something, please.
A short stretch of pavement would be easy and inexpensive to install and would mean the loss of one parking space, but would make life easier for pedestrians and motorists turning into or out of Pym Street on to Drake Road.
