COUNCILLOR Hughes did not succeed in 'putting the record straight' on the naming of the Walkham bridge now being built (Letters March 24), economy with the facts (obscurantism) got in the way.

He did not list the six suggested names and the number of persons preferring each. Also, the significance of the World Heritage Site was a red herring, the only criteria for the name was the proximity of the single small, defunct Gem mine and no other.

He also employed the familiar political ploy of extending his remit to deflect attention from the subject in hand; he emphasised the obvious advantage of the bridge to local people and tourism.

He might have added that the design now adopted is not that shown in the 2004 exhibition of which there is an illustration in Tavistock Museum.

Perhaps he would like to supply an

up-dated print.
