OKEHAMPTON Otters swimmers travelled to Dawlish recently for their final friendly gala against two home teams and Clevedon. The Otters got off to a slow start and by the end of the first quarter were trailing the opposition. Some inspirational swimming followed, elevating the Otters to a worthy second position behind Clevedon by the gala close. The Otters amassed 16 first places during the evening. Outstanding swimming from Matthew Webber and Matthew Westlake resulted in two firsts apiece, with John Radnor, Hannah Cox, Rebecca Chapman and Alex Wooldridge securing single individual successes. The combination of two of the club?s most improving youngsters Sam Collett and George Roberts jointly won the boys? 2x 25m backstroke event. The Otters boys? squad were outstanding throughout, being victorious in all the 4x25m medley and freestyle relay events in the 10, 13 and 15 years age groups. Ben Hurley, George Roberts, Sam Collett, Dominic Woolridge, Diggory North, Jake Jendon, Matthew Webber, Kieran Mitchell, Huw Draper, John Radnor, Matthew Westlake and Alex Wooldridge were the victorious team members. Towards the close and spurred on by the enthusiasm of the travelling supporters the mixed 10x25m canon relay team stormed to the finish in first place. New team members Dominic Woolridge, sisters Chloe and Lauren Blackmur and Huw Draper were all excellent, with team captain John Radnor showing true leadership qualities both on poolside and in the pool. The Otters are now enjoying a much deserved summer break with Junior training resuming on Monday September 5 at 7pm. New members should contact 01409 221377 for information on how to join the club. Masters resume normal training on Tuesday September 6 at 8pm. The club expressed thanks to all the swimmers, parents, helpers and teachers who have given their time and support over the past year. The club will be looking to repeat and improve on all those individual and team successes achieved this year, in 2006. Masters swimmers are continuing to swim on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8pm.
