THE official opening of the new basketball net and play surface at Courtlands Road play park in Tavistock was celebrated with a first-rate shot by mayor Norma Woodcock on Monday.

The net, donated by the Basketball Association but installed by the town council, is one of a series of five which have been placed Tavistock play areas this summer.

Cllr Woodcock said it was 'great' to see so many residents, both children, parents and grandparents, at the opening.

'We thought when we put these posts up it would be mainly 14 and 15 year-olds using them, but we know it's also the sevens, eights and nines who are finding them a real asset.

'It's also wonderful for parents, because they know their children are playing safely in this area.'

Cllr Woodcock said the council was 'very proud' to be involved in this new initiative and would be working 'very closely' with residents in Courtlands and other areas like Bishopsmead and Monksmead to improve and develop play areas for the benefit of the community.

Deputy town clerk Rosie Keyhoe said as soon as the authority has formally taken over the Courtlands Road play area from developers Cavanna Homes, the project to develop the park further can 'really take off'.

One of the main aims on the residents' 'wishlist' for the site was to see the grass mowed regularly.

Mrs Keyhoe said the council was ready and waiting to take this on, once the land transfer has gone through.
