PUPILS from more than 20 primary schools in the area attended the West Devon Junior Life Skills event which is held annually at Okehampton Camp — organised by West Devon Borough Council.
Children experience some difficult and dangerous situations — but it's all pretend. The exercise is aimed at helping youngsters know exactly what to do if they found themselves in any of the situations in real life.
The organisers have geared the West Devon Junior Life Skills so that youngsters learn through fun. It is an interactive event encouraging decision making.
Aspects covered include first aid, drugs, farm safety, road safety, objects on the moor and safety on the beach. There is also advice on what to do if you smell gas and safety with tools.
With simulated hazards the youngsters are told to stay calm, inform emergency services and, by being aware of potential dangers, help to ensure a safe environment.
Many various organisations have helped with support and sponsorship.
Primary schools that took part included Tavistock, Meavy, Gulworthy, St Andrew's at Buckland Monachorum, Walkhampton, South Tawton, Boasley Cross, Spreyton, Chagford, North Tawton, Exbourne, Bridestowe, Lydford, Mary Tavy and Brentor, St Peter's Tavistock, Bere Alston, Northlew and Ashbury, Hatherleigh, Whitchurch, Horrabridge, Highampton, Okehampton, Lewtrenchard, Lifton, Princetown, Lamerton and Milton Abbot.
