TAVISKATE, the body set up to launch a skatepark in Bensons Meadows, is looking at new plans which could enable the scheme to get started at long last.

It is considering a concrete bowl which when sunk into the ground may be less intrusive and can be landscaped in sympathy with its surroundings, as well as being quieter.

It would be usable by rollerbladers, skateboarders and BMX riders.

The earlier idea of a tarmac site was estimated to cost around £50,000; the concrete alternative could be cheaper.

The idea of a skatepark was raised two and a half years ago and seems to be no nearer a launch date.

West Devon Borough Council, Tavistock Town Council, Community Action for Rural Devon and Youthwize, the town youth group, are all in favour of it, but so far Taviskate has been unable to persuade any organisation to take long-term responsiblity for the project.

Taviskate chairman Bob Pilbeam said: 'We need that long-term commitment in order to get the grants to keep it going.'

He said the skatepark would get young people off the streets and carparks into an area of their own.
