YELVERTON Tennis Club held its annual meeting and there was a good attendance by club members to thank Simon Murray, who was standing down after his excellent two years as chairman. Simon thanked his hard working committee for their dedication to the club and all the efforts necessary to make it so successful and enjoyable. He thanked all those associated with the ladies, men?s and junior teams, who had a successful year. Simon gave special thanks to Ann Short, Phil Gasche and Roger Froud for all their hard work in a very rain affected league season. The fund for the floodlights has reached £4,000 and Mary Downey and her committee were thanked for their hard work in raising this money by a combination of car boot sales, raffles and quiz evenings, which will continue until the project is completed. Simon also thanked Peter Smith and Phil Gashe and others for arranging the club?s summer and autumn club tournaments, as well as fun events such as tennis/Pimms evenings and racquet trials. Ann is also running a ladies winter doubles league from October until March. Mary Downey was elected as the new chairman, with Fiona Spreadbury as vice chairman. Most committee members were re-elected, with the welcome addition of Mike Williams. In the ladies winter league, top seeds Helen Smith and Wendy Sharland have won all their matches so far, although their last match against Ann Short and Julia Whetton could only be decided by a very close tie-break, 10-8. All the teams are enjoying this opportunity to keep playing some competitive tennis through the winter months.
