STAFF and students at Tavistock College held a one minute silence on September 11 last week, in memory of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on New York last year.
Classes were halted for one minute at exactly 1.46pm, when all staff and students were asked to stand in silence.
A statement by college principal John Simes was also read out to the whole school community.:
Mr Simes said: 'In remembering the atrocity committed on September 11 2001 in New York, we want to extend our sense of sympathy and solidarity to all those who have suffered, and continue to suffer, from acts of violence and oppression throughout the world.
'We wish to urge leaders throughout the world to pursue all means of peaceful reconciliation to resolve disputes, and respect for the lives and rights of all the world's citizens.'
In future years, the college will maintain a silence only on Armistice Day.
