I WRITE firstly to commend the people of Tavistock for an extremely well-attended and dignified Act of Remembrance in Bedford Square on Sunday. However, am I the only person attending to have been bewildered and slightly appalled that traffic was allowed to circulate through Bedford Square during this service?
If, for obvious reasons, traffic can be stopped or diverted during the procession, and stopped for the silence at the heart of the service, then why is it impossible to stop or divert the traffic for the rest of the time?
Particularly when the turnout is so impressive, and there are spectators spilling onto the road, there is a safety issue, regardless of the appropriateness of having one's reflection on the sacrifice of our service men and women being disturbed by the noise of traffic — and at one point the honking of a car horn.
We close Bedford Square for a whole weekday for Goose Fair. Surely we can close Bedford Square for 45 minutes to an hour on a Sunday to honour those who have died to protect our freedom.
