STAFF at Jewson's building merchants in Tavistock were amused to find a new street sign erected outside their business this week in Crelake Industrial Estate.

As the picture clearly shows, the sign, erected by a contractor on behalf of West Devon Borough Council, clearly shows 'Crelake Inudstrial Estate.'

Julie Worley, the assistant manager of Jewson's, said: 'We saw them fitting it last week but didn't take any notice at first, until we took a closer look. It gave our staff quite a laugh.'

A spokesperson for the borough council said: 'We thank everyone who has pointed out this error. We obviously recognise that this is slightly embarrassing. The mistake was made by the manufacturer of the sign, who is now replacing it as a matter of urgency.

'Our error was accepting the sign from the manufacturer and passing it to the contractor to put up without checking it. Unfortunately the contractor didn't report a problem with the sign when putting it up. We have now changed our procedure for accepting and issuing signs.'

Perhaps it's a sign of the times, but no doubt the person responsible may have used a little 'inudstrial language' when they realised their error.
