DONE Bookmakers in Duke Street, Tavistock has been ordered to remove a bold advertisement sign on its premises because planners say it is out of keeping with the character of the Grade II listed building.
An enforcement notice has been served on the company which failed to remove the sign despite assurances that it would, members of West Devon Borough Council's planning committee were told last week.
An application for external signage was refused by the planning authority in August last year.
But six months later it was brought to the notice of planning officers that a blue sign bearing bold white lettering had been fixed to the fascia above the windows of the front elevation and a projecting swinging sign.
Done was informed of its breach of planning control and letters were sent to the company but it failed to bring any response, officers said.
The committee agreed that the sign was also harmful to the appearance of the Conservation Area. Done has been given a month to comply with the notice or face legal action.
