THE national RESPECT campaign to clean up football at its grassroots is strongly sowing its seeds in Tavistock.

The initiative, backed by the English Football Association is trying to bring some decency back to our national game - for players, management and supporters to show respect to each other and match officials.

Allen Lewis, the commercial manager of Tavistock AFC, and a driving force behind the campaign, said: 'RESPECT at Tavistock AFC is going national! With the full backing of the Devon FA we will try and lead the way with the campaign that cleans up the football players and supporters. Its a huge challenge but I love the challenge.

'All we want is to see people enjoy football again without the foulness we all see everywhere! This is one big job but lets try.

Anyone who really knows me will laugh as I took on impossible horses to re-break and I only failed three times in over 35 years.'

Allen is working with Adam Hopkins, the Devon FA representative for Respect,

'Thousands have been spent on Tavistock AFC so we all owe it to the people that have raised the money to improve football for everyone in this area.'

A good example of the work being done at local level was shown at a football drive in Tavistock organised by the town's new football development officer Neil Jordain, where more than 20 children took part in.
