THE present position of Tavistock Library near busy but usually available street parking makes it possible for those dependent on cars for transport to use the library facilities generally as part of a shopping visit to the town.

I have noted with growing concern that when the library moves (allegedly in June) the only available parking close by is in the pay and display car park. There appears to be no provision for the short-term library visitor other than to pay over the odds for a ticket.

If the new location is not to prove a disincentive to its use, some arrangement must be made to accommodate the large number of ratepayers who simply want to return books and pick up others — generally a matter of a few minutes. The least that is required is say a dozen designated parking spaces within the present car park for free use by library users — preferably as near as possible to the library, with a duration of say half an hour.

Failure to address the point will reinforce my view that the local authorities have little interest in the needs and expectations of ratepayers (and voters), but prefer to pursue their own agenda on the provision of facilities which is based on ensuring that life is made as difficult as possible for motorists — a policy that has already cost Tavistock dearly.
