THE pasty shop bakery in Callington will close later this month after a 14-year history in the town.

Shop owner Rob Langton said his store in Church Street had been struggling for the past 18 months because of the economic climate, parking charge increases and the opening of the Tesco supermarket.

'I used to get a lot of school children in at lunchtime but now they nip around the back of the school to Tesco because it is easier for them,' he said. 'There are generally less people in town.

'The parking charges do not help,' he said. Fees were doubled in April for the first hour's parking in the town centre car park. 'Parking is free after 4pm but that's not a lot of good to me then.'

Mr Langton said two of his three full-time staff were going to university so it seemed like the right time to shut up shop.

It is not all doom and gloom though as Mr Langton will continue making pasties for trade customers from home and hopes to supply to outlets in Callington.
