A COMMUNITY has been left devastated after a 90-year-old resident died in a road accident last week.

Geraldine Evans, of Glebelands, Cheriton Bishop, who was known as a pillar of the community, died after a collision with a lorry, while walking in Sidwell Street in Exeter on Friday.

The accident, which happened at 12.40pm has left villagers shocked and saddened.

Chairman of Cheriton Bishop Parish Council Anne Welham said: Mrs Evans' death will leave a large gap in a close community.

'She was a wonderful lady who knew practically everyone in the village.

'She would always be at all the functions and everyone knew who she was.

'She was a churchgoer and belonged to all the local functions and clubs.

'She will be missed very much.'

The 41-year-old driver of the lorry, who is from Tiptree in Essex, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care and attention and was bailed until Tuesday, February 16 next year.
