AN extraordinary session of shooting by Carole Brown, of Okehampton Smallbore Rifle Club, recently saw her shoot 50 'bulls' on the trot — despite being blind.

Using an air rifle Carole hit match cards at the club's indoor air rifle range.

Club spokesperson Amanda Etherton said: 'This is an amazing score at the best of times, however, even more remarkable is that Carole is blind and shoots with the aid of sound. This is extremely difficult so it makes her achievement even more of a feat.'

Carole is currently the country's winner of the National Smallbore Rifle Association's supported individual Winter League division one for visually-impaired shooters.

To win, Carole shot ten rounds (20 shots per round) and scored an average of 99.60 (out of 100) over the winter months.

She also won division one of the 2012 Summer League and last September she went to Aberdeen to shoot in the Scottish Championships and was second with a score of 598 out of 600.

Carole has been blind since childhood and started shooting almost 13 years ago at the OSC's air rifle range when the club gained a grant for shooting for the blind equipment.

Bernard Rendle, the club's chairman, taught Carole initially, then she went to Hereford Royal National College for the Blind where she was coached in her shooting for two years.

She now returns to the Okehampton Club every other week, where she is assisted on the range by Bernard and his wife, Yvonne.
