Bovey Tracey 3

Chagford 4

DESPITE the near constant rain, both teams managed to serve up a seven goal thriller in an exciting pre-season friendly.

Bereft of a number of their South West Peninsula League regulars, Bovey were to gain a 20th minute advantage with a somewhat generous penalty award that Revell slammed in.

The visitors seemed to step up a gear and were soon rewarded with an equaliser.

Miller found himself out on Chagford's right flank, turned and crossed superbly to find Mark Williams climbing highest to head powerfully home.

The next ten minutes saw Chagford holding and passing the ball well and there was little surprise when Andrew Davis bagged their second, after Chadwick had won the ball in midfield.

The half closed with the teams sharing possession but Chagford's midfield and defence looking comfortable.

The comfort bubble was soon to burst, after the break, when Sneap found space to finish strongly, Endacott just failing to turn the ball away.

When Revell's stunning 70th minute free-kick put Bovey ahead it seemed Chagford were not to come away with a favourable result, for all their efforts.

Davis and Miller both went close but it was substitute Oscar Emanuel who grabbed another equalising goal. Picking up the ball with his back to goal Emanuel by-passed two tackles, slipped past the home 'keeper and rolled the ball over the line.

Neither team were seeking a draw but went all out for a winner and it took a penalty to settle the issue. Chagford's Miller was pushed to the ground, in the 87th minute, with referee Mr Hammond deeming it to be in the box. Dan Johnston confidently stepped up to take the kick and was a little fortunate the 'keeper went the wrong way, as the ball again rolled in.

This was a good work-out for both teams and promoted Bovey Tracey should more than hold their own in the South West Peninsula League.

Chagford Reserves 0

THIS was probably the best performance in a long time from Chagford Reserves and it took a piledriver of a shot to divide the teams.

Having played a prominent midfield role for the first team, Chagford's Chadwick deputised for Geering in the reserve's goal without too many problems.

Of the two teams, the visitors played the better football in the first half although Bovey's mix of youth and experience created the better chances.

Chagford's regular back four of Philpott, Thorn, Forsey and Harvey worked well for each other, giving Chadwick little to do. Emanuel again showed why he will be a useful acquisition ahead of Potter and Ralph, who bossed much of the middle of the park.

As it was, honours were even until the 86th minute when, for once, Chagford failed to close on a man 20 yards out and he blasted the ball home.

Bovey had been building up to this for some minutes previously, as Chagford dropped deeper and deeper into their own half — a mindset they need to rid themselves of in the coming season.

Despite the result, Chagford Reserves can take heart from their efforts and certainly look very capable of a successful season.
