A GLOBE-TROTTING musician from Buckland Monachorum is planning to make the jailhouse rock with the launch of his new album in Princetown next month.

Internationally renowned folk-rock maestro Seth Lakeman is returning to his Dartmoor roots for the launch of his second solo album ?Kitty Jay? ? a dark and charismatic collection of songs inspired by the moorland landscape.

Seth will be performing his songs behind bars at Dartmoor Jail in front of about 100 of the 600 inmates and admits he is intrigued to see behind the prison?s granite walls.

He said: ?The songs I have written for ?Kitty Jay? are inspired by the mysterious and haunting background of Dartmoor and they deal with all kinds of extremes of human behaviour and emotion.

?I?m sure these are things that prisoners inside Dartmoor can identify with ? I have often passed the walls and wondered what it was like inside.?

The title track from Seth?s album tells the story of one of the moor?s most enduring legends about a young servant girl named Kitty Jay who worked at one of the large houses on the moor.

Legend tells that she hanged herself in one of the barns on the estate after conceiving a child by the son of the house.

As a suicide she was buried in unconsecrated ground ? at a crossroads near Hound Tor ? and to this day it is said fresh flowers appear on her grave each day although no-one is ever seen to put them there.

Other songs on the album deal with murder and tragedy, as Seth says: ?The album is all about what drives people to do extreme and desperate things.

?This audience should understand that better than most people, but it will be daunting to play to them, especially in such awesome surroundings.?

Seth is also planning to let the prisoners sing: ?Some of the inmates are talented musicians and I might even invite one or more of them to join me on stage.?

As the prison launch is obviously not open to the general public Seth will also be performing at the Cooperage in Vauxhall Street, Plymouth, on Tuesday May 4 where he will be accompanied by Steve Knightley who is one half of the duo Show of Hands.

Seth Lakeman?s album ?Kitty Jay? goes on sale on May 10 and will be available in most music stores.
