A TEACHER from South Tawton School has been appointed as the new head of Hatherleigh Community Primary. Caroline Boother takes up the post in April and said she was 'very excited' by the prospect. She said: 'I have worked with the previous headteacher Linda Mitchell, through the Okehampton Learning Community, and know the school as a friendly, caring community with high values and standards. My husband and children are members of the Hatherleigh Silver Band, too! 'I am looking forward to working closely with the staff, governers and local community to ensure the school continues to develop, whilst retaining its emphasis on meeting the needs of each individual child. 'We shall continue to participate in the Healthy Schools scheme and to develop the School Travel Plan, as well as looking at ways to improve the school environment.' Caroline was educated at King Edward Sixth High School, Edgbaston, Birmingham, and obtained a B.Ed honours degree at Exeter University, School of Education (St Luke's). She taught at St John's School, Sidmouth, from 1986 to 1993, and was housemistress for her last three years there. Caroline took a career break to have two children but continued with occasional supply teaching. She has been at South Tawton Primary since 1998. She taught key stage 1 pupils for four years, followed by a move to key stage 2, taking responsibility for literacy, personal, social and health education, including leading work on the Healthy Schools Award. In recent years she has been a member of the school leadership team with responsibility for key stage 2, as well as child protection. She completed her National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) at the end of 2006. 'I have been very lucky to have been part of a fantastic team of staff and governors at South Tawton Primary School, so my excitement will be tinged with some sadness at saying goodbye to them and the children of South Tawton,' added Caroline.
